 Chapter 10

I showed up to work fifteen minutes early the next morning. I hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before between crying, thinking evil thoughts about Greg, and coming to grips with the fact I wasn’t getting married anymore. My left finger felt so bare and naked without the ring. Every time I looked at it, I started to cry all over again.

“Is your watch broken?” Richard asked me when I entered the kitchen. He was wearing a white dress shirt and dark gray suit pants, sitting at the kitchen table with his paper in hand.

“No, just getting an early start is all,” I replied.

I grabbed the eggs and bacon out of the refrigerator, and began preparing his breakfast, doing all I could to not meet his gaze.

“You look sick,” he commented. “Don’t tell me you ate bad chicken again?”

“No, not chicken this time,” I said, choking back tears.

“Does it have something to do with your ring missing?”

Damn, why did he have to be so freaking observant all the time? I wasn’t sure if I could get through the entire story without crying hysterically, but I took a deep breath and told him what had happened last night. By the end, I was crying more than I was talking.

Richard got up from his seat and without saying a word, put his arms around me in a tight embrace. With my face buried in his chest, I cried harder than I ever had before.

It was amazing how quickly my life had become such a bucket of scum. Sure, Greg had his weird little quirks, but he’d always put me first. He’d promise how he’d never let anyone hurt me, which made what happened last night seem so unbelievable. I didn’t even know who he was anymore. He’d become a total stranger.

“It’s alright,” Richard whispered. “He never deserved a woman like you. Someone who’d practically enslave herself just to keep an arrogant ass like me from suing her friend. You’re too good for him.”

“You’re not an ass,” I said, sniffling as I spoke. I was slowly getting myself under control, again.

I pulled away slightly, expecting him to let go, but he didn’t. He just kept holding me.

“Consider it a blessing that you’ve found out what he’s really like before you married him, and worse, had kids with him. You dodged a bullet.”

That certainly wasn’t how it felt. It felt like the bullet had plunged right through me. The wedding was off, no more becoming Mrs. Evans, and no more becoming a mommy. My future had been abruptly canceled. The tears began to bubble up again.

“But I wanted to be married so badly,” I said. “My whole future with being a wife and mother has all vanished. I’m just Evi, the unloved single girl.”

“I think that’s being a little dramatic,” he said. “There’s got to be something else you want to be other than somebody’s wife or mother. Didn’t you ever want a career?”

My career plans had always been about becoming a housewife and that was all.
